Create killer content, the rest will follow

Lately I’ve noticed Lucky Magazine has an amazing social media footprint. I’m addicted to its Facebook fan page updates, fresh Web content and fashion 101 videos that at just two to four minutes long are surprisingly chock full of great styling tips.

The downside? The site lacks the slick interface I’ve become accustomed to on savvy social media sites. It’s cluttered and overwhelms the mind with too many options. Slide shows are cumbersome, refreshing the page with each new image. If my mouse so much as edges onto the “Subscribe” tab, an annoying pop-up ad plops onto the screen and forces me to click out of it.

But none of that matters.

Because at the end of the day, I’ll put up with just about anything to access the phenomenally creative, truly unique content that you can only find at Lucky. Sometimes we forget that social media is less about what tool you use and more about the raw information flowing through those conduits.

Bottom line: Stop trying to be snazzy. Create awesomely mind-blowing content your users will crave. Window dressing catches up eventually.
